A POEM
by NAMI Member,
Diana M. Guenther-Legate
I once was lost alone
afraid
Depression drowned my very soul
and monopolized every day
I walked lonely around the town
afraid to say a word for fear no one would hear
No one would understand as I felt like sinking in the sand
No one could understand the sad world I lived in
Brain chemicals disarray producing bad thoughts
and a feeling of hopelessness
Now recovery takes its place
NAMI heard my pleas for peace
NAMI spoke up and said what I wished I could say
about the sadness that plagued my every day
NAMI educated and gave me hope in new medications
that would correct the chemical storm that caused
my depression with them now I am recovered
NAMI walks with me side by side taking my hand
and leading me to a home where I found new friends
Happiness where recovery rocks and the mind isn’t
locked to new hope where ideals generate and happiness lives

Diana heard about the mental health rally
and lobby day in Springfield, she sat down and wrote this poem.
She took copies of the poem with her to the rally and passed them
out amongst the crowd and to lawmakers.) |
