NAMI-Madison County Legislative Update August 22, 2004

It's Time
to  Say Thank You!

It's official! In the budget passed by the state legislature on 7/24/2004 (Senate Bill 3340, House Amendment 1) -- which Governor Blagojevich signed on 7/30/2004, the following amounts are designated for supportive housing:

bullet

Supportive MI Housing Line Item - $4,450,000 ($1.75 M from FY2004, plus
$2.7 M new for FY2005)

bullet

Supportive Housing Services - $3,490,300 (cut by 3.5% from $3.6 M)

All in all a pretty good outcome in a terrifically tough budget year!

This represents a tremendous team effort! You all did a really great job. Time and again and again, taking a piece of your precious, scarce time and writing the letter, making the call, faxing the fax, sending the postcard, meeting with that legislator/policymaker, coming to Springfield, and on and on. You did It for Supportive Housing!!!

Okay, now – remember those thank you letters – a happy and necessary task for our future work.

And if you’ve already sent your thank you letters - thank you!
For those of you who have yet to send the letters, don't worry, just go ahead and do it! It took the legislators a while to pass the budget. They will understand if it took you a while to thank them.
They will remember if you thank them, though, so it is important to do that.

Sample Thank You Letters may be downloaded here. At the very least, send thank you letters to your state legislators, senators and representatives. Then, it would be great if you could thank Representatives Feigenholtz and Hamos, our strong champions, and the Governor, who put the money in the budget in the first place, and the four leaders, who kept it in the budget.

  Our absolutely heroic champions:

Rep. Sara Feigenholtz and Rep. Julie Hamos
They really went way out their on that limb for us!

Governor Blagojevich,
who kept his word and put it in the budget and kept it in the budget

The four leaders, Senate President Emil Jones, Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson, Speaker Michael Madigan, and House Republican Leader Tom Cross.

Sample letters are provided to make this as easy as possible. It's very important to take this final step in the process because --

bullet

Many of these individuals genuinely helped us.

bullet

These relationships that are so important to us collectively and
individually as we do this work--just like any others that are important
to us--need to be nurtured and maintained.

bullet

We're building a support base for supportive housing.

bullet

We'll need to ask for more money next year.

Much, much thanks to you all for all your work!!!
