Education Programs

NAMI-Madison County offers several educational courses to help families deal with and cope with mental illness. These educational courses are free of charge and are open to both members and nonmembers of NAMI.   • Family to Family  - This course is specifically designed for family members and friends of individuals with brain disorders.
  • NAMI Basics - NAMI Basics teaches the fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with mental illness.
  • Peer to Peer  - An education course on the topic of recovery for any person with a serious brain disorder.
  • Piecing It All Together - A Conference on Children's Mental Health.

FAMILY TO FAMILY

This is a peer family education program designed to foster learning, healing and empowerment among families of individuals with serious brain disorders. This 12 week course is specifically designed for family members and close friends of individuals with brain disorders (mental illnesses). The course is not appropriate for person who are themselves suffering from any of these illnesses. However, consumers in recovery who also have an immediate family member with a serious brain disorder are encouraged to attend the course.

This course offers: Information about illnesses of the brain and their treatment: Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); Up-to-date information about medications, side effects and problems with medication adherence; discussion of the biological bases of brain disorders (mental illnesses), treatment options and recovery Coping skills: Gaining empathy by understanding what a person with a serious brain disorder experiences; problem solving, listening, and communication techniques; handling periods of crisis and relapse; care for the caregiver: coping with worry, stress, and overload. Advocacy: Guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community, and better mental health services and advocacy for federal, state and local policies and services.

PEER TO PEER

Peer-to-Peer is a unique, experiential learning program for people with any serious mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery.  The course consists of nine two-hour units and is taught by a team of three trained "mentors" who are personally experienced at living well with mental illness.

Each class contains a combination of lecture and interactive exercise material and closes with Mindfulness Practice (techniques offered to develop and expand awareness). Each class builds on the one before: attendance each week, therefore, is required.
