NAMI BasicsPeer to PeerFamily to Family

Written by an experienced family member mental health professional, NAMI Basics teaches the fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with mental illness. NAMI Basics is a 6 week series of classes that will cover ADHD, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Schizophrenia and Substance Abuse Disorders; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medication use in the treatment of mental illness in children; listening and communication techniques; problem solving skills; and an overview of the mental health and school systems roles in treating children with mental illness.

The course will be taught by Rob and Jane Roennigke who have taken extensive training as course instructors and who are parents. "This course is a wonderful experience!" says Jane. "It balances basic psycho-educational and skill training with emotional support, self-care and empowerment. We hope parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness take advantage of this unique opportunity."

Pre-registration is required. The course is offered free of charge and consists of 6 classes that meet weekly beginning on Sunday, January 11, 2009 for 2 1/2 hour sessions. It will be held in Alton at Saint Clare’s Hospital. For more information or to register for this class, please call the NAMI office at (618) 798-9788 or email:
namimadisoncty@sbcglobal.net.

(Note: NAMI Basics replaces our Visions for Tomorrow educational program that has been used in Madison County for the past several years.)

This is a 9 week education course on the topic of recovery for any person with serious mental illness who is interested in establishing and maintaining wellness. The course uses a combination of lecture, interactive exercise and structured group processes.  Along with the diversity of experience among course participants, this affords for a lively dynamic that moves the course along. Peer to Peer is taught by teams of three trained "mentors" or peer teachers, who are themselves experienced at living well with mental illness.

This 9 week course can make a difference in your life. Pre-registration is required.  For more information, call the NAMI office at (618) 798-9788. more about peer to peer

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Madison County offers the NAMI Family to Family Education Program specifically for families (parents, siblings, spouses, adult children and significant others) of persons diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness.

NAMI Madison County would like to have a Family to Family class this spring. Dates are pending at this time. We would like to invite any and all who would benefit from this class. Family to Family provides caregivers with communication and problem-solving techniques, coping mechanisms, and the self-care skills needed to deal with their loved one’s mental illness as well as its impact on the family.

The Family to Family course will cover schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and self-care.

The curriculum, written by Joyce Burland, Education Director of NAMI National, has been designated a Best Practice Program following research through the University of Maryland and will be taught by NAMI-Madison County family member volunteers who have been trained as course instructors.

Family to Family is free and open to NAMI members and nonmembers. If you are interested or know of anyone, please call the NAMI Madison County Office at 618-798-9788 or send email to
namimadisoncty@sbcglobal.net. Office hours are Monday - Thursday 12:00 pm to 4:30 pm.
