The Power of Procovery
In Healing Mental Illness
by Kathleen Crowley

Reviewed by Pat Rudloff

The Power of Procovery is the kind of book one might  keep on a nightstand with a highlighter and pen for ready reference.  This is a spiral bound book which lays flat when opened, uses an easy-to-read format with lots of bulleted information, bold type, thought-provoking quotes, bold headlines and practical, experience-based advice.

Kathleen Crowley has a mental illness and uses her own experiences and remarkable insights and the life experiences of others to show what all individuals – consumers, family, and staff – can do, despite the limitations of symptoms and systems, to achieve procovery.

Procovery
is defined in the book as “attaining a productive and fulfilling life, regardless of the level of health assumed attainable [vs.recovery, returning to a prior state of health].”  It is a process focused on moving forward, letting go of what was and rebuilding new dreams.

The chapters which deal with such topics as diagnosis, medications, stigma, partnering with family members, healthcare providers, gathering support, creating change and self-care among others,  each conclude with notes for the consumer, family and staff.

The Power of Procovery can only be purchased from The Health Action Network in
Los Angeles.  The book sells for $29.95 plus $3.50 shipping.  The price for 10 or more books is $24.95 plus $2.00/book shipping.  Help us put this book in the NAMI library at the 10 or more price.   Please contact Pat Rudloff, 618-656-6781 or by email -- silverlining6@charter.net  to order your copy.
